What is a Refund Transfer
A Refund Transfer is a financial service provided by banks that lets taxpayers cover their filing fees using their federal and/or state tax refund, rather than paying upfront. This option is available only if you choose to e-file your return and are expecting a refund. In order to opt into this service, you must make this indication on the Consent to Use Of Tax Return Information page. Refund Transfer products are optional.
If you want the public overview of eligibility, fees, and who handles the product, see our Refund Transfer explainer page.
MyFreeTaxReturn.com is a tax software company that allows taxpayers to construct their tax return to be e-filed and transmitted with transfer services. The Refund Transfer products offered are through a third party service provided by Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, (“SBTPG”), a subsidiary of Green Dot Corporation, and Green Dot Bank (“Bank”). Refund Transfers are deposit products using Green Dot Bank, Member FDIC, that enable certain deductions from the account to be processed. Refund Transfers are not loans. This service allows taxpayers to file their tax return without needing to pay for service fees upfront — the return is filed with temporary bank account information, and when the IRS and/or state taxing authority issues the refund, authorized fees are deducted before the remaining balance is disbursed via the disbursement method chosen. If opted into this service, taxpayers will need to refer to SBTPG when seeking updates on the progress of their refund.
There is a $29.95 Refund Processing Fee for a Refund Transfer, in addition to any existing service fees associated with your tax return.
