How to report or remove a dependent
Quick Answer
Add, edit, or remove a dependent on the Dependent and Household Member Information page. Select Edit to modify an existing dependent or +Add New for a new one. Check Show Advanced Dependent Information for special conditions.
How to edit / delete a dependent
- Enter the return, select Dependent and Household Member Information
If not located under your Forms In Return, use the search tool to locate the page
- Select Edit to edit an existing Dependent’s information, or +Add New to enter a new Dependent
Indicating Advanced Dependent Conditions
You can indicate special conditions that your dependent may have on the Dependent and Household Member Information page.
The Advanced Dependent Information is applicable when any of the following apply to your dependent/household member:
Qualifying Student Dependent with no Education Expenses to report.
Disabled
Kidnapped
Form 8332; Claiming child that did not live with you due to divorce or decree.
Form 2120; Multiple Support Agreement.
When dependent is “Parent”, and they qualify taxpayer to file as Head-of-Household, a “Parent is Dependent” question will populate on this page. You must check the box to treat parent asdependent notshown).
- Scroll to the bottom of the Dependent and Household Member Information page until you see the Show Advanced Dependent Information check box.
- Checking the Show Advanced Dependent Information check box allows you to view and add special condition information for the dependent.
