How to amend a 2020-2023 return
If you are looking to file a federal/state amendment on your accepted return, please note there are different processes based on the year you are looking to amend. This article provides a step by step guide on how to amend a 2020 - 2023 returns. Please determine which tax year you are looking to amend before proceeding.

Our system can only amend a return if you have filed your original return with MyFreeTaxReturn.com
If you originally filed with different software we are unable to file your amendment
2020 - 2022 amendments MUST be mailed
2023 amendments can be e-filed or mailed
How to amend a 2020 - 2023 return
Login to your MyFreeTaxReturn.com account
Select Work With Filing on the return you are looking to amend, this may be under prior years
Select Edit a Return in Progress
Select click here to amend a return in the blue text
Search 1040-X in the sidebar search engine (Follow this step ONLY if you are looking to amend your FEDERAL tax return)
- This step adds the 1040-X form, allowing you to make a federal amendment. If you are looking to only amend your state return, you can disregard this step all together. In the 1040-X page you will fill out the necessary information and provide an explanation as to why you are making this amendment.
**6) Make the amendment **- add/adjust the federal/state change you are looking to make in the return
This step is taxpayer specific. Essentially, you will now implement the change that prompted the amendment.
For example: If you forgot to include your W-2 from your second job you would add a W-2.
You must include an explanation of changes to include in your amendment for the IRS
7)Submit your amended return to be filed.
- You can now e-file or mail your amended return.
