File a federal extension (Form 4868) by logging in to MyFreeTaxReturn.com, selecting Work With Filing, then Begin a Fed Extension on the Navigation Page. Sign the User Agreement first, then enter your total tax liability, total payments, and amount you're paying.

What if my return is accepted

Edit your state return by entering your return and selecting Edit (State Abbreviation) Return from the Return Summary page. This opens the state-specific forms where you can update your state filing information.

Check the Show Advanced Dependent Information box at the bottom of the Dependent page to indicate special conditions: qualifying student, disabled, kidnapped, Form 8332 (divorce/decree), or Form 2120 (multiple support).

Why am I getting an error message to include Schedule C
The IRS payee instructions for the Form 1099-NEC say to report income from a Form 1099-NEC on Schedule C or F (Form 1040) if a sole proprietor.
Why am I getting a - "I have no taxable income?" error message "total income of zero"
Based on the information you've submitted, your forms of income are considered "exempt from tax." Due to this, the IRS will not be able to process your return electronically because all the fields will contain '0' values.
Why am I getting an error message that my “SSN is already in use”
If you are seeing the SSN already in use message this is likely because you have started two returns for 2025, you need to press Work With Filing on the Tax Center page. This is a blue button in the grey square. Select Work With Filing on the return that displays the last 4 of your SSN.

A Tax Return Signature PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a Self-Selected PIN made up of any 5 numbers (except all zeros) to enter as your electronic signature. If you file a joint return, both taxpayer and spouse are required to select their own PIN.
